Demo

This page describes the demo scenario for the IoT Kafka Data Platform project.

The demo environment is available online and provides a hands-on experience with the platform. You can explore the platform's features and capabilities in a controlled environment.

Scenario

The demo environment simulates a manufacturing plant that produces metal parts. The production line is equipped with sensors and counters that collect data about the manufacturing process. The data is sent to the IoT Kafka Data Platform for processing and analysis.

The manufacturer in this scenario is looking to maximize production output and minimize inventory costs. The goal is to show how by collecting and analyzing data from the production line in real time, the manufacturer can optimize their supply chain and improve operational efficiency, leading to cost savings and increased revenue.

KPIs

The demo environment tracks the following key performance indicators (KPIs) for the manufacturing plant:

  • OEE: Overall Equipment Effectiveness, calculated as the product of Availability, Performance, and Quality.
  • Yield: The ratio of good parts produced to the total number of parts produced.
  • Target Marginal Cost: The target cost per part that the manufacturer aims to achieve.
  • Actual Marginal Cost: The actual cost per part based on the production data.
  • Inventory Level: The number of parts in inventory at any given time.
  • Production Output: The number of parts produced per unit of time.
  • Profit / Loss: The difference between revenue and costs.

Dashboards

The demo environment includes several dashboards to visualize the data. The dashboards are available in Grafana and can be accessed through the link below.

Production Planning

This dashboard provides an overview for the production planning manager to compare the current production against the expected demand and inventory levels. It includes charts for production output, inventory levels, and yield.

Supply Chain

This dashboard shows the sales and procurement teams the current inventory levels, production output, and target marginal cost. It helps them make informed decisions about whether or not the current orders can be fulfilled on time and whether or not additional parts need to be sold to minimize inventory costs. It includes charts for inventory levels, production output, marginal cost and profit / loss.

Under the Hood

You can explore the inner workings of the IoT Kafka Data Platform by accessing the user interface for Kafka and Node-RED. These provide a visual representation of the data flow and processing steps.
